Be brilliant, play brilliant, and learn how to play craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It's presumed that Sir William's paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel's name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It's believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
