Be cunning, play smart, and learn how to play craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William's paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress's name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It's said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Don't Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
