Be smart, play cunning, and become versed in craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William's knights played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress's name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It's said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Don't Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
