Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William's soldiers gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel's name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don't Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
