Be smart, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William's knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel's name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Don't Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
