Be smart, play clever, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William's knights bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle's name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Don't Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
