Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It's believed that Sir William's paladins gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress's name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It's said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
