Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William's knights wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle's name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It's said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win.
