Be clever, play smart, and discover how to play craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It's presumed that Sir William's soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress's name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don't Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
