Be smart, play smart, and master craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It's theorized that Sir William's paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel's name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don't Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
