Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William's horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress's name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It's believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
