Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It's theorized that Sir William's paladins bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress's name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It's said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
