Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It's supposed that Sir William's soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel's name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It's said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Don't Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
