Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It's believed that Sir William's soldiers gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification's name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It's said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
