Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It's believed that Sir William's paladins bet on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle's name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
