Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William's soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle's name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It's said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
