Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William's soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification's name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It's said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
