Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William's paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel's name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It's believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
