Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William's horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel's name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don't Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
