Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It's believed that Sir William's paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress's name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It's said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
